PROPOSALS for a new Widnes nightclub look set to be given the green light, despite objections from protesters.

The two-storey club - to be constructed on the western side of Widnes Road - was formerly the Empire Cinema.

Applicants Jim Mills and Sammy Evans, who have held nightclub licences in the town for more than 20 years, have encountered objections in the form of a 194-name petition.

Residents have voiced fears that the area could become a hotbed for drink-related violence and crime, while Cheshire Constabulary has voiced opposition against proposals for entries and exits at the rear.

The police have told the council: 'It would be far preferable to have such large numbers disgorged out on to the main road, where they are both visible and able to disperse quickly.'

A report to members of the development control committee says residents will be shielded from noise pollution and disturbance as the site will be surrounded by a business, leisure and office buildings.

The report also claims that existing business premises on the opposite side of Widnes Road 'significantly screen the main residential area'.

But Brendan Karalius, acting chairman of the Frederick Street Residents' Association, says the town centre would be thrown into chaos.

Mr Karalius said: 'There will be a riot with all these punters coming out the clubs at 2am in the morning. Imagine three crowds piling out of three clubs - it's a recipe for trouble.

'Residents of Widnes are amazed that this council can plan for two or three more licensed premises for the plaza area of the town when the place is drowning in pubs, clubs and off-licences already.'

However, the report said: 'It is considered that any potential noise disturbance generated from inside the building can be adequately controlled by conditions.'
