NORTH Cheshire Hospitals Trust has been challenged to prove it has enough cash to fund a massive shake-up in health provision.

The trust aims to transfer emergency and surgical facilities from Halton Hospital to Warrington.

In return, the Runcorn site would become a centre of excellence for the treatment of cancer and kidney disorders.

However, members of Halton Borough Council's executive board have challenged the trust to put its money where its mouth is. In a letter to the trust, councillors have said: 'It is recognised by the council that the model for the proposed changes in the delivery of services provides a sound platform to modernise acute-based services and is proven elsewhere in the country.

'However, given the current lack of information and data provided by the trust and the uncertainty about whether funding will be forthcoming, there are at present significant doubts that this model can be delivered.'

A spokesman added: 'There are still many unknowns and a lack of detail in the proposals.'
