HEALTH chiefs have hit back at criticism as they make their premises smoke free.

The Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust will be officially smoke free from November 1, following Government recommendations that NHS premises are smoke free by 2006.

Last week we reported how Winsford smoker Charlie Parkinson was leading a campaign to defeat the initiative, which he calls 'ludicrous'.

Mr Parkinson, of Pentland Close, Winsford, said the decision to remove smoking shelters at Northwich's Victoria Infirmary and Leighton Hospital is a recipe for dis-aster, as stressed-out patients or family members will have nowhere to light up. He said they may take out their frustrations on members of staff.

He said: 'The way it is at the minute is perfect - designated smoking shelters work well for everyone.'

But Rachael Nicholls, Smoke Free project worker at Central Cheshire Primary Care Trust which is overseeing the ban, said: 'The health and safety of our staff is of paramount importance, and we would never place them in jeopardy.

'This is a big change, and as with any change there will be people who are unhappy, but no violence will be tolerated.

'Our staff have received training in communication sessions, and 24-hour security staff will be on hand if any problems do arise.

'As a health organisation, we must promote a smoke-free policy, and this includes removing the existing smoking shelters.'
