CHESTER Cathedral will officially open its new shop to the public today (Thursday).

The shop, which has been closed since February, has been given a brand new facelift to increase its appeal to visitors, by a specialist heritage designer.

Some of the building’s stories and symbolism were looked at to determine how best they could be reflected in the new design.

New energy efficient lighting has also been introduced, as well as new items of stock, including a specially designed eco shopping bag.

Cathedral spokesman Nick Fry said: “The end result is fascinating, a wonderful combination of the old and the new in a retail environment.

“Aspects of the story of the cathedral have been blended with the demands of modern shoppers in a unique setting.”

The cathedral shop was officially opened yesterday by Lord Mayor of Chester Pam Booher, but is open to the public from today. Opening times are Monday-Saturday from 9.30 am-5pm and Sunday 11am-4pm
