THE Cheshire Regiment has a new commanding officer to lead it out to Iraq next year.
At the head of 1st Battalion's soldiers when they do their turn of duty in the war zone will be Lieutenant Colonel John Donnelly.
He comes from Lyme Park, Disley, where his family runs the National Trust estate.
He has spent 20 years with the Cheshires and served in a number of roles and on demanding operational deployments including several tours of Northern Ireland, the Balkans and, most recently, Eritrea.
He takes command of the regiment, recently back from Canada, as it completes a year of training in preparation for deployment to Iraq next spring.
Lt Col Donnelly takes over as CO from Lieutenant Colonel Philip Astle.
