A cycling club is gearing up for a gruelling 144 mile stint in the saddle in aid of two hospices.

The newly formed Velo Club Prestatyn and Hoole (VCPH) is raising funds for charities local to them - St Kentigern Hospice and Claire House Hospice.

Eleven of the 13-member club will take part in the Coast to Coast Charity Cycle in May this year.

Club secretary Mark Lewis said it was the group’s inaugural event.

Mark, 33, a site manager who lives at Prestatyn, said: “We have decided it would be apt to do the challenge in aid of two worthwhile charities from our districts.

“The challenge we have chosen is the tough 144 mile coast to coast ride starting in Whitehaven on the east coast of England over to Sunderland on the west coast over two days.

“There are 11 of us in total taking part in the challenge and our fundraising drive has already commenced through Justgiving.

“We are a normal bunch of lads who became friends through our wives who have all been best friends since school.”

The group of cyclists boasts a mix of occupations including a teacher, biochemist, caravan park manager, construction site manager, rock group stage manager and self-employed plumber.

Mark added: “We pride ourselves on the fun side of club life and are purely all about the cycling and socialising side of things.

“We all share the same attitude that raising a few pound along the way is a bonus and can only help raise awareness of our chosen charities.”

The team will travel up to Whitehaven on Friday, May 2 before embarking on their mammoth journey the following day.

They will stay overnight on Saturday in a village called Nenthead before completing the ride in Sunderland on the Sunday afternoon.
