A PUB that was subject to an arson attack could be transformed and help plug a village housing shortage.

A planning application to develop The George and Dragon, High Street, Tarvin has been submitted, which includes rented accommodation.

The plans include five bedrooms with en-suite facilities for letting purposes on the first floor, as well as a complete revamp to the bar, dining, kitchen and outside areas.

The application from Marston's Pub Company has been received favourably by Tarvin Parish Councillors, who have been concerned about the appearance of the pub since it closed last summer when the landlords left.

The pub was then subject to an arson attack in November, which completely gutted the ground floor.

Parish councillor Roger Hones said: 'The refurbishment is ambitious but long overdue.

'The internal redesign is imaginative and I hope the new layout, with only one bar, will cater for drinkers as well as people dining.

'The brewery also seem to plan to go to some trouble to improve the outside areas to the rear of the building, in

particular removing a recently built white PVC conservatory which was inappropriate in a conservation area.

'If the car park is landscaped and surfaced as promised by the brewery this will complete the tidying up of an area which has let the village centre down over the years.'

A cottage garden, which contains sheltered seating is planned, along with a more open beer garden.

A two bedroom apartment for the tenant running the pub is also included, along with 27 car parking spaces.

Andrew Andrea Operations Director for Marston's Pub Company said: 'We really value the George & Dragon.'
