A CITY street will be the focus of a new musical which has been written in Chester.

Garden Lane – The Musical is the latest production of Theatre in the Quarter, the city’s leading professional and community theatre company.

Written by Rob Edmonds with music by Matt Baker, both of whom live in the Garden Quarter, the musical is about a community under threat.

Matt explains: “The Garden Quarter has an increasing number of student houses and so a lot of the community is transient causing an imbalance.

“The play is about how the community can break down barriers and get together under difficult circumstances.”

Rob has got a lot of material for the script from locals he has met at the Bouverie pub on Garden Lane and Matt has already written a lot of the original music.

“The songs are an eclectic mix of styles from Les Miserables to Meatloaf.” Said Matt.

Theatre in the Quarter is for performers aged 16-22 and Matt has been overwhelmed with interest in the project so far.

“There is so much creative talent in and around the Garden Quarter,” he added.

Rehearsals for Garden Lane-The Musical start on August 11 and will be performed at Chester Racecourse’s Pavilion from September 3-6.

The production has received funding from ACE (Arts Council England) and support from Chester Performs and Chester Racecourse.

Previous productions include Some Sunny Day, Sweet Sixteen and Twelve Days of Christmas.
