Chester grandmother Jackie Holland is embarking on a new career after 17 years as a school cook.
“I had a goal to pass my NVQ Level 3 in childcare and get a new job before I turned 50,” said Jackie, who reaches her half century on October 18.
She is becoming a family support worker in a children’s centre in Northwich.
Jackie has been school cook at Belgrave School in Westminster Park since 1991.
She was highlighted by The Chronicle in 2005 for her work in providing healthy menus for children at the time when celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was promoting better school dinners.
“I came for six months for training and I liked it so much I ended up staying,” she said.
Jackie started retraining at the aged of 47 and got an NVQ Level 2 in childcare. In just 16 weeks she qualified with an NVQ Level 3 and applied for her first job.
“It was the first interview I had been to in 20 years,” says Jackie, who lives in Lache with husband Dave.
“I was really pleased just to have reached the shortlist and then I got offered the job!”
