A NEW baby elephant was born at Chester Zoo on Sunday morning.

The male Asian elephant was born at 1.39am on Sunday, November 25, to first-time mum Sundara.

Grandmother Sithami and great grandmother Thi Hi Way are both also in the herd at the Upton zoo.

Spokesman Will Condliffe said: “Our keepers are delighted with the new arrival. Both mum and baby are doing really well indeed and they’ve already been out and about on the main paddock.”

Asian elephants are classed by conservationists as endangered in the wild.

The zoo’s festive offering this Christmas is a Lantern Magic show. Visitors of all ages are invited to take a trip through the zoo’s gardens and pass life-sized animal lanterns.

Children will be able to make their own lantern to take home.

Lantern Magic runs on this weekend and again on December 8-9, 14-16 and 21-23. The sessions start every 30 minutes from 4pm-6.30pm and the zoo closes at 8pm. To book visit www.chesterzoo.org.
