FAMILY and friends gathered from across the country to be at Nell’s surprise 100th birthday bash.

Ellen Myfannwy Thomas of Upton, known as Nell, celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at a surprise lunch at Willington Hall Hotel on Friday (January 2).

Friends travelled from as far away as London, Oxford, Cambridge and Anglesey to celebrate her special day.

Nell was born and brought up in Chester and spent her working life at Browns of Chester as their chief cashier.

She had two brothers, Evan and Owen, who both died many years ago. She regularly attended and was an active member of the Welsh Chapel in St John Street, Chester.

For the past 50 years she has lived in Upton with her sister-in-law, Kath Thomas.

Nell’s niece, Helen Patrick, said: “She has always been known as Auntie Nell to both family and friends, young and old alike. She is always interested in everyone’s activities and interests, especially those of the children. She is a very keen gardener, retaining her enthusiasm and green-fingers to this day by tending her many house plants.

“Nell still enjoys a daily paper and reads the Chester Chronicle from cover to cover, keeping up to date with general news.

“Nell is loved by everyone who comes into contact with her as is evident by the gathering here today to help her celebrate her 100th birthday.”
