A WARTIME romance shows no sign of slowing down as a Runcorn couple celebrate 60 years of marriage.
George and Jessie Powell, of Malpas Road, today celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary with their family, including their two daughters, one son, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Jessie and George met during their Royal Navy days in the Second World War when they were both based at Southampton.
To celebrate their marriage milestone the couple had booked a cruise for two on the Queen Mary, where they planned to renew their wed-ding vows en route to New York.
The luxury cruise was setting sale from Southampton, the very place where George and Jessie met back
in 1944. Unfortunately their plans where changed at the last minute as George was taken ill.
The pair tied the knot at Holmfirth Parish Church in Jessie's home town in west Yorkshire where the Last of the Summer Wine is filmed.
Jessie said: 'I wore a borrowed dress at my wedding. It was during the war and we didn't have much.'
They moved to Runcorn, George's home town, a year after their marriage and have remained there for 59 happy years.
Their family have planned a special day for the couple to celebrate their anniversary.
Jessie added: 'Our family have planned a celebration for us. We have been told to dress up and be ready for 10am. Then next week we are all going for a Chinese banquet in Frodsham.'
