CUSTOMERS hoping to celebrate Christmas with a meal at an award-winning country pub found locked doors and a ringing telephone on their arrival.

The Fox and Barrel, Cotebrook, Tarporley, closed days before Christmas without any notice, leaving families, friends and work colleagues, who had paid deposits, with empty pockets and empty bellies.

Spokesperson Sarah Perrins of Punch Taverns, who own the restaurant, said:“We hope the pub will open again with a new retailer on board within the next three weeks and continue to serve the public. It’s difficult for us to comment on it but it’s extremely unfortunate.
