THE mum of a toddler born nearly blind in one eye is getting on her bike to raise awareness of cataracts in children.

Freya Johnson, two and a half, was born with a cataract in her right eye and had her first operation when she was just six months old.

She is under the care of the Countess of Chester Hospital and has so far had three operations with the possibility of more in the future as surgeons battle to restore sight in the eye.

In July, mum Kerry Johnson and her family, of The Beeches, Great Sutton, will complete the Liverpool to Chester bike ride for the Childhood Cataract Network.

Kerry said: “I am trying to raise awareness of the condition whilst at the same time raise funds for the small parent-led charity Childhood Cataract Network.

“Cataracts in babies and children are uncommon and if left untreated can result in blindness.”

Many children suffer cataracts in both eyes (bilateral) or Freya's case, in one eye (unilateral).

Kerry added: “She leads a very normal life despite her condition. She has developed all her skills so far using one eye but we hope to gain some sight in her 'bad' eye with use of patching and glasses.”

The family are all taking part in the 20-mile trip from Liverpool to Chester on their bikes on July 18 and proceeds will go to the CCN charity,

Kerry added: “We would like to highlight our journey so far to raise awareness of the condition but also promote the support network available as well as raising money for the charity.”
