A multi-vehicle accident on the M56 this morning at Ellesmere Port is caused rush-hour problems for motorists.

The accident was on the eastbound carriageway at junction 15, where the M56 merges with the M53 at the Stoak Intercanghe.

Traffic was brought to a complete stop while vehicles were dragged to the hard shoulder, according to North West Motorway Police.

A North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said two ambulances attended and treated two walking wounded casualties but no-one needed to go to hospital.

Firefighters freed one woman from one of the cars.

Cheshire police said the incident involved a silver Vauxhall Corsa, a beige Audi A5, a red Audi A3 and a white BMW estate.

A spokesman for the constabulary said the carriageway was shut for a couple of minutes while the vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder.

The route was cleared by 9am.

Two fire engines from Ellesmere Port and one from Chester attended.
