WINSFORD'S MP Stephen O'Brien has praised everyone who has worked to provide 'excellent' new sports facilities for the whole community.

He was speaking at the official opening of Woodford Lodge Sports Centre, a new facility based at the high school which was unveiled on Thursday.

Mr O'Brien joined headteacher Steve Meeks, members of staff, students and local dignitaries at the ceremony performed by the chairman of Cheshire County Council, Barrie Hardern.

Mr O'Brien, the Conservative MP for Eddisbury, said: 'The facilities are excellent and I would like to congratulate everybody who has worked so hard to bring these new facilities to Winsford.

'The centre, which provides a range of sports, recreation and leisure facilities, is a great asset to the town and I am sure will be enjoyed by all those people who use it.

'Many young people in Winsford have told me the lack of leisure facilities in the town was a real problem for them and did not cater for their interests - I hope this facility will go some way to addressing those concerns and encourage them to take part in the many different sports and other activities on offer.'

The centre boasts a range of facilities including floodlit netball courts, a sports hall, gymnasium with a climbing wall, tennis courts, a full-sized, floodlit synthetic turf pitch, meeting and teaching rooms, as well as an air conditioned fitness suite.

Though reserved for pupils during school hours, the centre will be open to sports enthusiasts from around the town at evenings, weekends and during holidays.
