A SPORTS-MAD MP joined thousands of runners as he took part in his first ever marathon last weekend.

After months of training MP for Weaver Vale Graham Evans crossed the finish line at the London Marathon on Sunday after battling through the 26 miles in just under five hours.

Mr Evans, who has competed in the Helsby Half Marathon, was exhausted when he crossed the finish line in four hours 46mins and 15secs but was delighted to beat Labour’s Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls by just under an hour.

“I am delighted to report that I managed to survive,” said Mr Evans, after he completed his first ever full marathon.

“Whilst I am absolutely knackered, I really enjoyed myself. It’s been a fantastic day and was great to see so many people out on the streets showing their support for the thousands of people who were running to raise money for so many different and important causes. Britain at its best.”

And Mr Evans, who was one of seven MPs running the race, managed to raise over £1,000 for his chosen charities, the Royal British Legion and local hospices.

“I’m really pleased to have raised so much money and I’m very grateful for the many constituents who generously sponsored me and sent me messages of support. I am also glad that I managed to beat Ed Balls. Perhaps he ran too far too fast,” said Mr Evans.
