A MID Cheshire MP is a breath of fresh air in the House of Commons - literally!

Mike Hall, the Weaver Vale MP, had his lungs tested at a special stop smoking clinic at Westminster this week to highlight today's national No Smoking Day.

The test checks for carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas contained in cigarettes that reduces the blood's capacity to carry oxygen around the body.

The clinic, organised by Cancer Research UK and the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Service of the Houses of Parliament, provided advice on giving up smoking for MPs, peers and all staff at Westminster.

The Northwich MP said: 'I have never smoked but I know from personal family experience that it is dangerous and life-threatening.

'Smoking is still a major cause of death in the UK and I support any attempt to educate people about the dangers of tobacco and to support those who want to give up smoking.'
