FANS of Frodsham-born Take That star Gary Barlow have called on town leaders to recognise the singer’s achievements.

However, town councillors have dismissed the idea, claiming Gary Barlow – who celebrates his 40th birthday today – may not be Frodsham’s most famous son.

Hardcore fans who often visit the town are disappointed to find no recognition for the singer, who was born in Frodsham, lived in London Road and attended Frodsham High School.

Team GB, a group of 10 women who stay at The Courtyard, Frodsham, when they visit Gary’s childhood bungalow, believe the town should add his name to the town sign.

Team GB member Catherine Gasson said: “We have visited Frodsham once a year for the past two or three years. We chose Frodsham as that’s where Gary came from and we thought it would be nice to see where it all began.

“While we’ve been there we’ve looked round the town, sampled the local restaurants, walked past Gary’s old school.

“We were very tempted to add him to the Frodsham town sign – he needs a mention – birthplace of Gary Barlow.”

Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans is to raise the issue with Frodsham Town Council.

Mr Evans said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea to recognise Frodsham’s most famous son.

“My wife Cheryl is a massive fan of his work, he’s had success, he’s had good times, which makes it all the more incredible that his work has not been properly recognised in Frodsham.

“Greater recognition could also help boost tourism and bring more money and jobs into Frodsham. I am delighted to support the campaign in anyway I can.”

The owner of The Courtyard, Roger Maher, said: “If you go down to the Albert Dock you will see statues of the Beatles.

“We should be encouraging people to come to the area as visitors spend about 10 times more than the residents.”

However, Frodsham town council clerk Ian Hope said: “There are other important people who have made important contributions throughout Frodsham’s history.”

Frodsham deputy mayor Kyle McGregor added: “It is not very well known that he came from here, and it would be a great way of bringing people in.

“But there are other famous people linked with Frodsham, such as Bob Carolgees and Paula Radcliffe.

“It would be something that we would have to look into.”
