POLICE have reopened a busy main road after a van flipped over carrying a gas canister today.

At just after 2.50pm on Thursday (June 14) firefighters were called to A550 Welsh Road, Shotwick after a vehicle flipped over in the middle of the road carrying an explosive gas cannister.

Crews from Ellesmere Port attended the scene where they made safe the gas canister, and police closed the road for more than an hour while sand was scattered across the road.

The driver of the vehicle was treated for minor injuries at the scene after the van flipped and blocked off the width of the road causing traffic to pile up.

Police are advising motorists to expect minor delays along the route.
