A 34-YEAR-OLD Frodsham man was last Thursday charged with causing death by dangerous driving, careless driving while unfit to drive through drink and failure to stop.

The charges relate to the death of Leslie Cardus, 79, who was hit and killed on Fluin Lane, Frodsham in January.

Leslie Cardus, 79, was crossing Fluin Lane to eat at his neighbour’s house while his 79-year-old wife Grace was in hospital, when he was hit by a car at 5.20pm.

He was taken to Warrington hospital where he died of his injuries.

Mr Cardus, a retired pharmacist, was deployed to Palestine in 1947-48 with the 17th/21st Lancers and was once presented to Field Marshall Montgomery.

Mr Cardus also left a son, Jonathan, 39, and daughter Joanne, 41.

After his death his widow, Grace, said: “His passions in life, apart from his family, were his regiment and animals.”

Son Jonathan added: “One of the things dad always campaigned for was a speed camera on that spot.

“For his entire life he helped other people before himself. People took precedence over material things always.”

The man is on police bail and will appear before Chester Magistrates Court on August 8.

Due to technical errors Mr Cardus’s photo appeared on the front page of last week’s Frodsham and Helsby Chronicle without the above article. The Chronicle would like to apologise to Mr Cardus’ family, and other readers, for this error.
