A MASSIVE 96% of residents have given the thumbsup to plans for a new supermarket in Ellesmere Port.

When they were all questioned at Morrison supermarket's public exhibition in the town, only 4% of people said they didn't like the proposal.

Morrisons, which has made no secret over the years of wanting to come to the Port, has bought a plot of land from West Cheshire College in Regent Street.

It hopes to gain permission to build a superstore on the site, creating around 350 jobs.

The store's development director Chris Evenson said: 'We are delighted with this overwhelmingly positive response.

'The exhibition gave us the opportunity to discuss our proposals face to face with a good cross-section of the community.

'It's no secret we have wanted to come to the Port for a long time, and it is really gratifying for our plans to receive such a ringing endorsement from local people.

He thanked everyone who took part, saying their comments would be forwarded to the borough council's planning committee for when their application is considered.

Meanwhile, Morrisons has agreed a new bid of £3 billion for rival supermarket chain Safeway.

A store spokeswoman said: 'The takeover bid doesn't affect our plans at the West Cheshire College site.'
