MORE than 1,600 phones were cut off in Chester city centre last night after a main cable was cut by accident.

BT contractors were working on improvements to the network near Delamere Street when they cut through the cable at 9pm on Monday night.

The telephone company said they were working round the clock to get all affected city centre householders back online as quickly as possible.

A spokeswoman said: “We are working to restore this service following this incident and we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”
