POLICE are warning that somebody could have been killed after a stone hit a vehicle on the M65 after it was thrown from an overhead footbridge.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt after the missile was thrown from the Weaver footbridge over the M56 on the stretch between Frodsham and Helsby about 4.45pm on Thursday, December 22.

The stone hit a Honda Civic car travelling below, causing damage to the vehicle, but no injuries. A group of youths were seen on the footbridge at the time.

Local officer PC Dave Walton said: “Fortunately, nobody was hurt as a result of this incident, but the consequences could have been devastating.

“I would remind young people of this as they may not realise that what they perceive as mischief could result in serious injury, or death.

“I would also ask parents to make sure that they know where their youngsters are and what they are doing.

“Motorways are extremely dangerous areas and young people should stay away.”

The dangers of hurtling stones at motorway traffic was recently highlighted in the national media after a car windscreen was cracked when a ‘large stone’ was thrown at it from a motorway bridge in Gloucestershire.

Anyone with any information about the Cheshire incident, which could identify those responsible, are asked to contact PC Walton on the police non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers hotline 0800 555 111.
