HOMEOWNERS face a gruelling wait to see if a controversial development will be approved.

Anaconda Investments of Cuddington, which wants to build a small housing development on land at the junction of Northwich Road and Wallerscote Road in Weaverham, took its proposal to a public inquiry after Vale Royal Borough Council twice rejected the application. Bosses - and residents who have objected to the scheme - now have to wait up to six weeks for the outcome of the hearing.

The public inquiry on Tuesday last week was attended by residents, Anaconda Investments, representatives of the borough council and an independent inspector.

They heard that the planning committee had turned down one application to build eight terraced 'starter' homes and another to build eight houses and six flats on the land. Anaconda outraged protesters by seeking a public inquiry into both decisions, and also by resubmitting its original proposal to planners.

Norma Carter, whose house in Greenwood Close would be over-looked by the development, said: 'We have to wait for up to six weeks for the decision, so they are putting us through more misery. They haven't given us any thought at all.

'The first house would be only nine feet from our wall. The inspector came to look where the development will be. We are not giving up.'

Ruth Elliot-Smith, a director of Anaconda Investments, said: 'Everybody had their say. The inspector has had a good look and will consider what he has seen.'

Borough councillor Doug Shingler said the development is not appropriate for Weaverham.
