FOREIGN Secretary David Miliband, more used to top level meetings in the world’s capitals and at the UN, found himself in the ancient refectory of Chester Cathedral.
Mr Miliband was in the city to attend a fundraising dinner with the Labour Party faithful.
Centuries after the original 40 monks ate their simple meals in silence, Mr Miliband was welcomed by Chester Constituency Labour Party chairman Jane Mercer and Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Andrew Miller.
Chester MP Christine Russell was unable to be present due to a family bereavement.
Before the dinner, Mr Miliband met students from the University of Chester.
During the dinner, he delighted the more than 100 guests by circulating to each table, missing his own meal.
The cathedral was even more delighted when both Mr Miliband and Mr Miller praised the surroundings and the Foreign Secretary agreed to sign the visitors book.
