MORE than 350 people turned out to see Michael Owen officially open a new equine centre at his Malpas horse stables.

The Manchester United star joined co-owner and Betfair founder Andrew Black, trainer Tom Dascombe and At the Races presenter Matt Chapman to cut the ribbon for the new pool, spa and veterinary centre at Manor House Stables.

The unveiling of the yard’s new facility came after the annual parade of yearlings where guests got the opportunity to spot the stars of the future, some of which were available to buy.

Onlookers were also treated to a display by the yard’s professional jockeys on a racehorse simulator which had been supplied especially for the occasion by Racewood Ltd, while there was also special activities for the youngsters including face painting, pony rides and a horse shoe tossing competition.

And a real highlight was seeing one of the horses take to the water for a dip in his new swimming pool.

Marine Boy, who was loaned by Owen to Chester FC Racing Club earlier this year, seemed to be having the time of his life as he splashed about in the pool, despite still recovering from a recent injury.

The pool will serve as a helpful aid to horses who have suffered similarly with injuries.

Owen, who bought the 160 acre stables in 2007, said: “We like to think that Manor House is improving and getting better and better each year.

“We have had a fantastic day and everyone has enjoyed themselves.

“We think we are competing at the highest event potential now and are eagerly looking forward to next year’s campaign.”
