YOUNG drivers are getting up to speed with road safety, thanks to a new DVD by advanced drivers.

Wirral Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) have produced 1,000 copies of their DVD, Driven Away, which will be sent to schools and youth groups across Chester and Wirral.

Drama students at Hilbre High School helped film the DVD, which shows the consequences of careless or dangerous driving.

Senior IAM Observer Norman Jarvis, of Great Sutton takes drivers through the advanced driving test and helped co-ordinate the DVD.

“Three years ago we had the idea of making a DVD showing examples of bad driving and then showing how it should be done.”

He said the DVD is designed to show young drivers the potential consequences of dangerous driving.

“One scenario shows someone going to a party, taking drugs and drinking and getting into a car despite being in a state of near collapse.

“We also have very moving footage of a mother, Denise Rodgers, who lost her son when a drunk driver hit him. She describes hearing that he had been in a crash, going to see him in hospital and how she dealt with his death.”

Mr Jarvis added: “We have 1,000 copies of the DVD and if any schools or groups in the area want a copy we will send it to them.

“We will do anything we can to help lower the toll of lives lost.”
