NORTH West Tory MEP Sir Robert Atkins has welcomed the news that EU experts have finally approved the total lifting of the ban on exports of British beef.
Sir Robert said: 'Our farmers have been waiting 10 long years for this news. I'm delighted but it's long overdue.
'The export ban on meat from younger cattle was lifted seven years ago but the red tape was so onerous that British farmers lost a huge chunk of their market share. Now we are on an equal footing again.
'The onus is now on the British Government to help our farmers - not that it has a good record in this regard. We need a concerted and determined effort by ministers and the Meat and Livestock Commission to restore British beef to its rightful place in international markets.'
