MEET Rhinomaniac Mike Clifford.
Come rain, wind or shine Mike, of Pine Grove, Hoole, has been out snapping pictures of rhino’s across the city and has now put together a fabulous album containing all 62 of them!
Mike, well known in Chester as ‘Mickey’, has prepared a rhino mania wall chart and a photo album with of all the pictures he has taken of the rhinos which include Brutus, Scoopy, Romeo The Rhino, Meg, Empathy, Elvis, Bling, Chamba, Tushi and Winnie the Rhino.
Mike explained: “It has taken me five weeks to do but I don’t have a car so I have used public transport to get to Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Lime Street Station and Ellesmere Port.
“I have had a fantastic time photographing them all.”
The retired local government officer and proud Cestrian believes Rhino Mania is the best thing to happen in Chester for a long time.
He said: “I am in my sixties and I am really delighted and chuffed that I have been able to do something like this in my own city. It really has been worthwhile.
“I can’t speak highly enough of the rhino’s. I’m a Cestrian born and bred and this is something which is fantastic for our city. People who I have met as I have been taking pictures of the rhinos have been talking about nothing else.
“On the first day, July 5, when the rhinos came into the city, I started taking pictures of them. I started by the town hall on Northgate Street then St Werburgh Street and moved on to Eastgate Street and St John Street and already had a few of them by then.
“I managed eventually to get all 62, there were some times when the weather wasn’t good so I had to do them again when it was clear.”
He added: “I think Rhino Mania is a marvellous initiative for Chester it brings in a lot of people into the city supports some great causes like conservation and The Hospice of the Good Shepherd through the auction so I think it is a terrific thing all round.”
Mike’s favourite rhino design is Ecko by Mark Ecko.
