TONY Burton is the new caretaker for Chester’s unique and historic Rows, helping to keep the area clean and maintained.

Funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council, Tony takes over from the Rows first caretaker Dale Dean who is now working in Wrexham.

Tony will work closely with Chester Renaissance and the city’s retailers. He is on duty at the busiest times, including weekends.

He said: “Every day I’m surrounded by Chester’s history. The Rows are used by residents and visitors and I can help to make their visit a better experience.

“The Streetscene staff are out first thing in the morning and I complement their work, and focus entirely on the Rows area.”

Rita Waters, chief executive of Chester Renaissance, said: “The caretaker role was introduced last year after listening to the concerns of retailers about the appearance and cleanliness of the Rows.

“This dedicated Rows resource is being continued and I’m sure Tony will be welcomed by the many Rows users and traders.

“This will continue to help to improve the visitors experience and make our city one that we can be really proud to promote.”

The Grosvenor Shopping Centre provide a service base for Tony.

Julie Webb, Grosvenor Shopping Centre general manager, said: “We have seen big improvements in the Rows cleanliness over the past year and it’s excellent news that Tony is in place to ensure this continues.

“The Rows are such an important asset for Chester and they deserve the dedicated attention given by a full time caretaker.”

Chester’s famous shopping galleries date back to the 13th Century and were originally shops or warehouses at street level with a long gallery above, reached by steps from the street.
