A RADICAL overhaul of Northwich and Winsford markets is being considered by Vale Royal Borough Council.

The council is undertaking a wide-ranging review on the performance of, and chances to improve, the two town centre markets, and also Vale Royal Farmers Market, which meets monthly.

A range of options will be considered before the final review is completed in just under 12 months time, and everything from pumping thousands of pounds into the markets to closing them down will be looked at.

Traders are adamant the only way forward is to invest in better facilities.

Their major concern is the 'lack of investment' in both Northwich and Winsford markets. Since the last refurbishment more than a decade ago, they say only £35,000 has been spent on improving the markets, mostly going on painting the external walls and floor in Northwich and providing additional lock-up stalls in Winsford.

One part of the review suggests any improvements could be financed by the tenants through a rent increase, something traders are unhappy about.

John Brade, chairman of the National Markets Federation's Northwich branch, said: 'We have been promised new stalls and other things for years now. We want the place bringing up to the 21st Century because modern shopping demands comfort and our stalls are in the 1960s.

'But why should we have a rent increase? What has happened to the money we have paid in rent in the past? If the council increases the rent, the traders will disappear.'

Despite his concerns, Mr Brade says efforts by John Green, Vale Royal's new market superintendent, has led to real improvements and an increase in custom and trader numbers. He said: 'John Green has been a massive step in the right direction for us - he is experienced and knows what he is doing.'

According to council figures, Winsford Market grossed £109,751 last year, with expenses of £74,594, netting Vale Royal a £35,157 profit. But Northwich Market's expenditure was £251,046, while its income was £228,746.

A spokesman for Vale Royal said the Best Value review is considering every aspect of the markets. She said: 'The council has a duty to secure the best value in the delivery of its services for all. Vale Royal's markets are one of five areas covered by this review.'
