A WEEKLY market day showcasing local traders would bring tourists and residents flocking back to Chester Market, say traders.

As retail expert Mary Portas calls for the Government to embrace the concept of a national market day, traders at Chester Market welcome the idea and urge the council to promote local trade during a weekly celebration of the market.

Stall owners said that, despite campaigning for years to get signs placed around the city centre pointing people toward the hall at the back of The Forum, many residents still had no idea where the market is.

Kevin Williams, who runs the Cheese Wedge, said he was in favour of a day where traders could set up stalls outside the town hall to draw people to the market inside.

“The market needs to be promoted – there was a guy who has lived here for four years and didn’t know Chester even had a market, which I think says it all.”

Sandra Taker of Toolcraft said: “It is about time that markets and traders are recognised for the services they continuously give to residents.”
