BOATERS from across Mid Cheshire could soon be helping to regenerate parts of Winsford.

British Waterways wants to build a marina on land to the rear of the Red Lion on the roundabout in Wharton Road, Winsford.

Bosses hope boaters taking advantage of the Anderton Boat Lift would travel along the River Weaver and stop off in Winsford at the marina.

Town leaders hope that would re-invigorate trade in that part of the town, as boaters would perhaps take advantage of pubs and restaurants.

Cllr Brian Clarke, who is heavily involved with the Winsford Area Working Group, which is overseeing the development of the town, said: 'British Waterways has indicated it would like a marina in Winsford.

'Now the Anderton Boat Lift is open people want to come along the River Weaver, heading toward Winsford, and a marina would be a place where they could stop off. People could get off there and go for a drink or something to eat. It would be a boost to restaurants and pubs in the area and it would perhaps attract new businesses.

'We have got land at the back of the Red Lion which would be a good site for a marina and that's an area where they would like to put it.

'At the moment that site is just a dark area where the vandals have the time of their lives, but this would really help us do something positive with that side of the town.'

Cllr Clarke said the marina would tie in with the overall plans to market the town to investors and tourists and said: 'I'm in for the long haul and I want to help make Winsford a better place for my children and family.'

British Waterways spokeswoman Lynn Pegler said: 'That's an idea that has been mooted in Winsford. But it is at a very early stage.'
