FOOTBALLING legend praised hundreds of brave soldiers as they marched through the streets of Chester to commemorate their return home from Afghanistan.

On Thursday (December 6) proud parents, children, wives and girlfriends clapped and cheered as the 500 soldiers from The 1st Battalion Royal Welsh lined up at the racecourse to be officially welcomed back to the city.

And the soldiers, who stood in silence following the march to remember two of their fallen colleagues, where praised for their bravery by footballing legend Sir Alex Ferguson, who presented medals to the soldiers before giving a moving speech where he told crowds the day was 'one of the most important things' he had done in his life.

Following the parade, the Manchester United manager held a short press conference where he praised the soldiers for their sacrifice and bravery in the face of war and conflict.
