A SEEMINGLY unprovoked late night attack left a man needing more than 100 stitches.

The victim was attacked by a man with a glass as he walked along Darwin Street shortly before midnight. He was walking with a female friend towards Castle Street past a doctors surgery and noticed three people, two females and a male, standing near to a chemists.

Then for no apparent reason, as the victim walked past the surgery, the male ran up behind him and smashed a glass on the right side of his face and neck. The victim ran off along Darwin Street towards Navigation Road and went home on foot. He was taken to Fazackerly Hospital in Liverpool where he had surgery and needed more than 100 stitches to his wounds.

Inspector Graeme Birmingham, of Northwich's Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: 'This matter is being investigated and I am confident with the help of the community we will be able to identify the offender.'

Police have issued descriptions of three people they want to question. The man is tall, skinny, white with dark hair, in his early to mid-20s. One female, shorter than the male was described as fat with long straight blonde hair, in her early to mid-20s. The other woman was white, with dark hair and in her mid-40s. The incident happened on July 21; details have only emerged now because of the victim's fragile state. nAnyone with details about the attack should contact PC Jim Plumb on 01244 614270 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
