A MAN was the victim of a sickening theft as he lay dead in a lift at a block of flats in Chester.

Police were called to the flats in Francis Street, Newtown, at 7.30am on Saturday (September 17) where they discovered the body of a 57 year-old man inside an elevator.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “Initial investigation into the man’s death suggests that he died from natural causes, having entered the elevator and collapsing several hours before the discovery of his body. His next of kin have been informed.

“As part of the investigation into the circumstances of the man’s death, local enquiries indicated that the man was the victim of theft whilst he lay collapsed in the elevator.

“Police subsequently arrested a local man who was interviewed by detectives. The man was charged with theft and will appear before Chester Magistrates on Friday, October 7.”
