A freak accident led to a man being taken to hospital with a nail in his hand last night (May 14).

The patient, in his 50s, apparently put his hand under a shelf in the garden shed at his home in Ballater Crescent, Great Boughton, Chester, which was when his flesh was pierced up to two inches deep by a nail that was sticking out.

His wife called paramedics who in turn requested fire crews at 7.30pm (Thursday May 14) because it was too painful for the casualty to simply retract his hand from the nail even though he had been given painkillers.

Firefighters cut the piece of wood on either side using a battery-operated saw so the man could travel to hospital in the ambulance with the nail still inside him ready for surgeons to extract it.
