A FATHER-OF-FIVE was battered to death by a jealous boyfriend, a jury has been told.
Sean Carrahar, 38, of Palmer Road, Sand-bach has pleaded not guilty to the murder of 61-year-old Peter Harris. His trial opened at Chester Crown Court yesterday.
The court was told that Mr Harris, of Townfields, Sandbach, had been out drinking heavily on the evening of Thursday, August 4, 2005, in pubs around the town.
He was last seen entering the car park of the Iceland store in High Street just after 11.30pm.
His body was found at 5.35am the following day by a delivery driver.
The prosecution claim that Carrahar carried out the killing after Mr Harris had developed a close relationship with his girlfriend Connie Bowden.
They also claim that Carrahar had known Mr Harris had recently come into a considerable amount of cash from the sale of a house he owned with a former girl-friend. They claim he wanted to steal cash from him to fund his drug habit.
Mr Harris suffered two parallel linear fractures to his skull caused by an object with a straight edge. He also suffered two broken ribs and heavy bruising to his chest and shoulder.
Opening his case, barrister Michael Chambers, prosecuting said: 'The prosecution say that on the night of August 4 last year he killed Mr Harris. We say the defendant struck the deceased on the back of the head causing him to fall to the ground. The prosecution say he then kicked him on the ground.
'The prosecution say the defendant did this because Peter Harris, sadly a lonely alcoholic, was getting too close to the defendant's girlfriend, a girl in her early 20s.'
The trial is expected to last three weeks and is being heard by the Recorder for Chester Elgan Edwards.
The case continues.
