A DRIVER was killed in a collision with a van on what police described as a 'bad bend' in the road.

Police were called at 6.57am yesterday, when the 57-year-old, from Kelsall, was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital but died from head and arm injuries.

The man is believed to have gone into cardiac arrest in the back of the ambulance.

Firefighters had to cut him free from his grey Renault Scenic on the A556, near the junction with the A54 in Delamere.

The green Leyland DAF box van, carrying bread, was travelling towards Chester. The two occupants, from Winsford, were described by police as 'walking wounded' with only minor injuries.

Residents say the A556 was still closed off from the junction at the Abbey Arms pub five hours later.

Two fire crews from Northwich arrived about 15 minutes after police.

Beryl Platt, who lives opposite the Abbey Arms on the A556, described how a car had gone into her front garden at 11.30pm two weeks ago as it negotiated a bend.

She said: 'The road's dangerous - there are always accidents.

'We've lived here for 30 years and we've seen some. There should be a 40mph speed limit.'

* A WOMAN was left trapped in her car after a three-vehicle smash involving a Royal Mail van.

The head-on crash, near the Two Mills garage on Parkgate Road, left the driver, believed to be from Liverpool, with suspected spinal injuries.

Fire crews spent 15 minutes cutting the roof off her grey Renault Clio to free her. A white Mercedes van was also involved.
