A MAN could face a prison sentence for breaking his teenage love rival's wrist with a golf club.

Carl Peter Briscall, of Marshall Lane, Northwich, appeared at Vale Royal Magistrates Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, on April 2.

Catherine Whincup, prosecuting, told the court that 23-year-old Briscall assaulted James George Garner, 19, on Woodlands Road, Hartford.

She said: 'The defendant assaulted Mr Garner following a disagreement about a girl they had both been seeing.'

The court heard how the victim was cycling home during the early hours of April 2 when he saw Briscall waiting by a car.

Ms Whincup said: 'As Mr Garner walked to the front of his house Briscall walked up to him carrying a metal golf club which he swung towards the victim's face.

'Mr Garner raised his arms to protect his face and the club struck the back of his hand, fracturing a bone in his wrist.'

Derek McDonald, defending, told the court that pre-sentence reports would help the case.

Magistrates warned Briscall that they were keeping all sentencing options open and adjourned the case until Thursday, August 25.
