A HOOLE man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing thousands of pounds from Chester Football Club.

Last week the club revealed to the Chronicle it was on course to lose up to £75,000 this season, partly through irregularities in the accounts.

It has since emerged there is a police investigation into the theft from the Bumpers Lane club which would account for a significant portion of the loss.

Supporters of the community-owned football club were informed about the financial anomaly in last week’s City Fans United meeting, held at the Exacta Stadium.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Constabulary said: “Cheshire police are investigating an allegation of theft of money from a business in Bumpers Lane after a complaint was received from the company on January 4.

“A 27-year-old man from Hoole has been arrested on suspicion of theft by an employee and has since been released on police bail.

“The investigation is continuing.”
