A STRICT banning order has been slapped on a man who made a string of needless 999 calls and abused nurses at Leighton Hospital's Accident and Emergency department.

Peter Sutton, 63, of West Street, Crewe, had more than 100 incidents recorded against him of misusing health services and abusing staff and patients since 2001.

The indefinite injunction served on him at Crewe County Court extends a temporary ban placed on him in November.

It prevents him for using Mersey Regional Ambulance Service or going into Leighton Hospital's casualty department unless he has a genuine medical emergency.

The court heard Sutton called ambulances when there was nothing wrong with him and was threatening and abusive to staff.

Leighton Hospital chief Simon Yates welcomed the tough stance which he said had come as a relief to staff.

He said: 'Peter Sutton routinely abused NHS services, staff and patients.

'He called ambulances to take him into hospital for no medical reason and frequently shouted at, threatened and swore at ambulance staff and hospital workers, as well as patients.

'He caused such dis-tress to staff and patients that the injunction was applied for by the NHS Security Management service.

'His actions were totally unacceptable. The injunction gives a very clear message: 'If you abuse our services or staff, you are liable to be prosecuted'.'

Mr Sutton did not attend the court hearings and was not available for comment yesterday.

The earlier court hearing was told alcohol played a part in his behaviour and he was known to act differently when sober.
