BISHOP Heber High School in Malpas hosted a cardiac screening event for community residents to learn more about their hearts.

The event, open to people aged 14–35, was organised by a team of specialist doctors and assistants from Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a charity that provides medical information on the most common causes of unexpected sudden cardiac death in people under 35.

CRY was founded in 1995 to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to Young Sudden Cardiac Death (YSCD) and Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS), umbrella terms used for the many different causes of cardiac arrest in young people.

During the screening session, specialist doctors carried out electrocardiograms (ECGs) on everyone, with some people undergoing further ECHO screening tests to investigate their heart patterns.

The event was funded through CRY and Gary Watson, a school invigilator who competed in last year’s London Marathon to raise sponsorship funds of more than £6,000 for the charity, in memory of Ian Bowen, a 19-year-old who died from a heart condition.
