Police say it could take up to four hours to reopen the M56 eastbound near Hapsford after a lorry jackknifed between junctions 14 and 14 at around 2.05pm this afternoon (June 12).
The lorry is completely blocking the carriageway, causing severe tailbacks.
Shortly before 3.30pm, Cheshire police tweeted:
The lorry driver sustained a minor hand injury and was not taken to hospital, according to a North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman.
A spokesman for Cheshire police added: “Officers are doing their best to get those who are stuck in the traffic off the motorway as soon as possible. Motorists and passengers are advised to remain in their vehicles and stay hydrated.
"Those in genuine need of police assistance should call us on 999."
Other roads experiencing congestion as a result of the incident include the M53 northbound between junction 12 and junction 11 of the M56, and the A51 Tarvin Road in both directions between Spital Walk and Tarvin Roundabout.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
