A Cheshire woman has expressed her dismay at a number of motorists reaction to a crash on the M56 during Monday afternoon.

Lorraine Jones, from Sutton Weaver, emailed The Chronicle after seeing cars drive down the hard shoulder to try and escape the motorway just moments after the accident.

The M56 was closed for around an hour in both directions from 3.30pm after a campervan overturned. Two people were airlifted to hospital.

Ms Jones wrote: "The motorway was closed in both directions, with traffic at a complete standstill, to allow the wonderful air ambulance to land.

"From the motorway bridge in Sutton Weaver I was incensed to see an articulated truck followed by about 15 cars drive down the hard shoulder obviously trying to exit the motorway at junction 12, Frodsham.

"They were unable to leave the motorway and came to a standstill blocking the hard shoulder. An ambulance, with lights flashing and the siren screaming came down the hard shoulder but was unable to get through because of the inconsiderate morons blocking the it’s path.

"It took over six minutes for the ambulance to get through. Surely the car journeys were not as important as getting injured people to the hospital. How would the morons blocking the hard shoulder feel if their loved ones were in the accident. Please show more consideration."
