Pupils at Tattenhall Park Primary School were excited to welcome the Lord Mayor of Chester to school to officially unveil a very special squirrel.

Angela Claydon said “I am delighted to be asked to officially unveil the Tattenhall Squirrel. As many of you will know this squirrel was carved by local international award winning sculptor Simon O’Rourke to be an uplifting piece of public sculpture to be enjoyed by pupils and community alike.”

Headteacher Mrs Laura Noble added: “He was carved from wood which came from the magnificent old oak tree which, until the winter storms of 2014, graced the playing fields of Tattenhall Park Primary School for many years.”

A competition to name the Tattenhall Squirrel was held and the winner was Joshua Andrews in Y2, with the moniker Seymour, who was warmly congratulated by the Lord Mayor.

The children were fascinated by the mayoral gold chain and the fact that she, although she is a woman, she is still called ‘Lord’.
