CHESTER Cathedral gift shop’s new look is to be unveiled by Lord Mayor Cllr Pam Booher on Wednesday June 27.

Work on a major refit is currently under way ahead of the formal opening by the Lord Mayor.

“It’s very appropriate that the lord mayor should perform the opening ceremony since she has close links with the cathedral,” said a spokesman.

Cllr Booher has chosen the cathedral choir as her charity for her year of office.

The gift shop closed three months ago for a major review.

“It rapidly became clear that nothing less than a major revamp was required,” added the spokesman.

Lytham St Anne’s, Lancashire based design firm BWD, which specialises in retail space in heritage sites, was commissioned to produce the new design.

It has also designed the shops at St George’s Hall in Liverpool and at Manchester Museum.

Aspects of the story of the cathedral have been blended with everything that shoppers would expect to see.

The shop will provide a full range of souvenirs, books, gifts, cards, CDs and jewellery, some unique to Chester Cathedral, as well as tempting new ranges of goods. It will also be possible to buy postage stamps.

The shop will be open to the public from Thursday June 28. There is no charge for entry and opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9.30am-5pm, Sunday 11am-4pm.
