FORGET clubbing till dawn, hanging around in trendy wine bars, or wining and dining in fancy restaurants.

When it comes to a top night out, half of the people in Ellesmere Port (49%) said their ideal night out is a trip to the local - beating everywhere else hands down.

More than two-thirds (77%) put it down to the fact they save on cab fares, with seven out of 10 (69%) saying they love their local because they know most of the people there.

The nationwide poll of 18 to 65 year-olds by Hardys & Hansons, the brewer and pub retailer, to uncover what constitutes the Great British Night out, revealed the traditional boozer is king in Ellesmere Port.

Seven out of 10 people inter-viewed (67%) said they consciously avoid visiting so-called 'hip' city-centre bars, what's more almost half (49%) were under 24.

Ellesmere Port's young people in the know are turning away from 'fashionable' bars in their droves, citing them as unfriendly (60%) and anonymous (66%).

The majority (69%) of those questioned said they don't like to feel pressured into going to the places to be seen (81%), branding them 'full of posers'. A total of 80% said that if they did visit this type of bar they felt conscious they were being judged on their appearance.

Queues to get in and to get served inside were also main reasons why posh bars got the major thumbs-down from 84% of people.

Tim Bonham, managing director at Hardys & Hansons, said: 'Just like the Rovers Return, the Queen Vic and the Woolpack, which play central roles in the soaps, the real-life local also acts as the hub of the community, a place where people from different generations and all walks of life can meet and socialise, so it's no surprise that that's where people young and old have the best time when they go out.

'The majority of people we spoke to in Ellesmere Port (95%) think of the local as almost an extension of their living room - somewhere to go for a good chat and a drink, without having to dress to impress.

'Many people also said being able to get a good value, informal bite to eat while they are out is also a bonus (94%).'
