The future of local government is facing a dramatic change with the Government aiming to end the current two-tier system of Cheshire County Council and six borough councils, to switch to a single-tier 'unitary' system of either just one council for the whole of Cheshire or two - one for east and one for west Cheshire.

The boroughs, including Crewe and Natwich Borough Council, and CongletonBorough Council, are now fighting for their existence with Congleton planning legal action and Crewe and Nantwich committed to a local referendum.
